I brought around 1.5 kg of Sathu Maavu (aka Health Porridge mix prepared from various kinds of millets & nuts) from India when we moved to Limerick this March. Amma made this for little A since kanji/porridge used to be A’s morning drink. Now that she is growing she is no longer interested in slightly bland porridges.. All she wants now is Dosai & Molagapodi 😝😝 Thought of preparing laddoos with the leftover kanji powder. It is perfect for snack box and even for adults you can have ladoo as a snack with evening chai or coffee.
Shall try to post step by step pics soon. I do have one last cup of Sathu Maavu mix leftover in the pantry, will use that to make a fresh batch of laddoos and update the pics here as well. For now I hope the instructions help.
If you don’t have homemade porridge mix you can even try using store bought ‘Manna’ Health Mix or any other brand’s porridge mix. Use a smaller quantity and try it first. If it works well then try it with larger quantity. Likewise if you want to substitue jaggery instead of sugar, you can try that as well.

small laddoos
|
- 2.5 cups Sathu Maavu
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 5-6 Cardamom Pods
- 1/4 cup Ghee + extra 1 tablespoon
- 1/4 cup Ghee + extra 1 tablespoon

- In a pan dry roast Sathu Maavu for 10 minutes. Keep the temperature low
- Use a spatula and continuously stir them. Ensure the powder doesn't get burnt
- Powder 1/2 cup of Sugar along with Cardamom Pods in a mixie. Melt ghee in microwave or in stove top. Keep it aside
- Once the roasting is done add sugar, 1/4 cup of ghee and mix everything well. Turn off the flame. Let it cool down for few minutes
- Then transfer them (sathu maavu+sugar+ghee mixture) to Mixie again and just pulse it for few seconds. This step helps in binding the ingredients better and also you can easily shape the laddoos. I do this trick for MaaviLakku and Amma taught me this in order to avoid using too much of ghee. I followed the same trick here too.
- Apply very little ghee in your hands and then start shaping laddoos.
- Easy toddler snack ready in under 30 minutes.
Store it in a clean air tight container. It stays good for upto 3-4 weeks. Also you don't need to store it in fridge. Make sure you take laddus out from the container using dry hands.
