Sathu maavu in Tamil means Health Mix. My mom has been making this rich health powder (loaded with vitamins, minerals)for so many years and its not only for babies but we adults can have it as midmorning snack or we can even drink this at evenings instead of coffee/Tea. Keeps our tummy full for a longer time.
When I was in India last year with little A, Amma prepared a big batch of Multi Grain Porridge Mix (Sathu maavu) at home. It is a bit tedious process hence I allocated that job to my mom 😂😂 but the effort is worth it.
Also the homemade mix lasts easily upto 6months for to one year if stored properly in an airtight container. Make sure you to use dry clean spoon everytime when you take the powder from container.
If you are in TamilNadu you can check shops that sell Nava Dhaanya/நவ தானியம் kanji packet. It has the following Raw ingredients (each 100gms)
Finger Millet (கேழ்வரகு)
Pearl Millet (கம்பு)
Foxtail Millet (தினை)
Sorghum (சோளம்)
Green moongdal (பச்சை பயறு)
Black Channa (கொண்டைகடலை)
Wheat (கோதுமை)
Peanuts (நிலக்கடலை)
Roasted Gram (பொட்டுக்கடலை)
Corn kernels (மக்கா சோளம்)
Parboiled Rice (புழுங்கல் அரிசி)
5 to 10 Cashews,Almonds,Elaichi for flavor
Dry Roast each & ever grain separately in a medium low flame for upto 10 minutes. Let them all cool down. Take it to flour mill and grind to smooth powder. The powder that my mom gave will last for another few weeks and then we might endup buying store bought health mix only..
The brand we always trust is Manna and have tried it numerous times. Though it is expensive the taste is very similar to that of homemade porridge

This is how the pack looks like. I forgot to take step wise pictures when I was in India for vacation. I asked Appa to take some pictures whenever they prepare next fresh batch of health mix for themselves. He sent it via whatsapp. Hopefully when I go there shall try make this again at home and will take clear pictures 🙂
