Whenever there are guests at home or during any special occasion be it birthdays/wedding anniversary my Amma’s celeberatory Tamil lunch menu will have Chinna vengaya arachuvitta sambar (Shallots sambar) & this urulaikezhangu pattani kari (Potato peas poriyal). The best part of this poriyal is those browned slighly crunchy pieces that gets stuck to the pan.
My Notes :
There are so many ways in which you could improvise the below recipe based on your preference.
– You can add ginger garlic pieces, garam masala too and serve it as side dish with Roti
– Instead of chilli powder & coriander powder you can use just a tablespoon of Sambar Powder to add spice to the kari
– If you want you can add one capsicum & tomato while sauteing onions

- Let them splutter. Then add curry leaves.
- Saute it in a medium flame for 2 minutes. Add chopped onions, chilli powder, coriander powder, hing and salt.
- Saute until onion becomes translucent.
- Then add the potato cubes.Mix them completely with onion masala.Simmer it for few minutes

- If you want crispy browned bits of potato then leave it like that for 10 more minutes without stirring 🙂
- Potato peas fry is ready to be served with Rice or Roti
- If you are going to prepare this poriyal in large quantity first make sure you don't over pressure cook the potatoes
- Pressure only for 2 whistles and then roughly chop them into cubes. Marinate potatoes with turmeric, salt, chilli powder and coriander powder for 10 minutes
- Then take two or three different pans depending on the quantity you are preparing. Then divide the chopped onions into 3 portions and saute them individually. Add little salt, hing.
- Now add the marinated potatoes
- Add generous dose of oil and carefully cook them in pans without mashing them much. Add frozen peas.Adjust salt and spice inbetween and add extra if needed
- I made this delicious Potato Peas fry for a Potluck lunch (group of 12 people) along with some Chocolate Peda. My friends absolutely loved it 🙂
