Paruppu Usili is a trademark brahmin recipe and mostly it is prepared using vegetables such as french beans,cluster beans or vazhaipoo. This kovakkai paruppu usili is inspired from Saffron Trail’s blog. Yesterday tried this recipe and it came out really well. Even if you are not a big fan of ivy gourd you will love it.

Ingredients
- 250 gms Kovakkai
- 1/2 tbsp Oil
- 1/4 tbsp Mustard Seeds
- Curry Leaves few
- 1/4 tbsp Salt
- pinch Turmeric a
- To Grind for Usili :
- 1 cup Channa Dal
- 1 Toor Dal /2 cup
- 4 Chillies Dried Red
- 1/4 tbsp Hing
- to taste Salt

Instructions
- Soak channa dal, toor dal in water for about 20 minutes.Chop ivy gourd lengthwise
- Boil ivy gourd in water with salt and turmeric.
- Wait until they are 3/4 th cooked. Drain water completely.Keep it aside.
- Now grind the dals along with salt,red chillies and hing to a coarse mixture.
- Spread the mixture in the idly plate and steam them for about 5 minutes.
- Let the steamed mixture cool down. Now crumble the mixture.
- Heat oil in a non-stick frying pan and add mustard seeds,curry leaves.
- Let them splutter. Add the dal mixture and saute for about 4-6 minutes.
- Now to this mixture add the kovakkai.
- Taste and adjust salt if required.
- You can serve this paruppusili with steamed rice, morekuzhambu or arachuvitta sambhar

Can I cut the kovakkai round shaped too and try this recipe?
Oh yes.. You can do that too..I personally prefer them to cut vertically 🙂
