The dough is the same as you prepare for modhakam. Filling is different here. Urad dal filling , sesame based fillings are popular apart from the regular coconut based filling ones.

- 1/2 cup Urad Dal
- 1/2 tbsp ginger Grated
- 3 Green chillies
- Curry leaves few
- 1/4 tbsp Mustard seeds
- 1/4 tbsp Hing
- 1 tbsp Oil

Instructions
- Soak urad dal in water for an hour half
- Grind green chillies, ginger along with soaked urad dal together
- Let it be a coarse mixture
- Add salt and steam the mixture in steamer for minutes 5
- Heat oil in a kadai and add mustard seeds,curry leaves
- Let them splutter. Now add this urad dal mixture to the pan
- Sprinkle salt and hing
- Once the urad mixture is cooled down, stuff them in rice dough balls as we did for sweet kozhukkattai and steam them for about 5 minutes
- Kara kozhukkais are ready to be served
