I have been making Pasta Upma for so many years. There is an old post where I used Green Chillies to add spice to the upma. In the below version I have used chilli powder, coriander powder. I have tried Pasta Upma with Sambar Powder and Rasam Powder too 😉 It tastes absolutely delicious. When you are bored of the regular cheesy pasta versions then try this. Am sure you won’t regret it. You can use any variety of pasta. Be it Fusilli, Macroni,Penne etc. The cooking time might vary based on your preference.
If you are using Instant Pot I would suggest you to go with 10 minutes in ‘Pressure Cook’ mode first and later increase or decrease based on the output. Another advantage of using IP is that you need just a teaspoon of oil to prepare this dish. Since we are adding loads of veggies it is such a wholesome option for both lunch or dinner. The following measurement serves two.
The below pic where I prepared Pasta Upma using Sambar Powder. Also I used more than two teaspoons of Oil hence that glossy look 🙂
Cook Time | 10 minutes |
Passive Time | 5 minutes |

people
|
- 1.5 cups Fusilli Pasta
- 1 onion
- 2 Tomatoes
- 1 carrot
- 1/4 Casicum
- 5 Beans
- 1/2 cup Frozen Peas
- 1/2 tsp ginger pieces
- 1/2 teaspoon Hing/Asafoetida
- 1 teaspoon Chilli Powder
- 1 teaspoon Coriander Powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon Oil
- 1 teaspoon Mustard Seeds
- 1 teaspoon urad dal
- 1 teaspoon Channa Dal
Ingredients

|
- Wash and Chop all the vegetables
- Turn 'Saute' mode in Instant Pot
- Add oil and once they are slightly hot start adding Mustard seeds, Urad dal and Channa Dal
- Let them splutter. Add the chopped veggies. Saute for a minute
- Add salt, turmeric, hing, chilli powder and coriander powder
- Then add the pasta of your choice. I have used Fusilli here. Approximately 1.5 cups of Dry Pasta
- You can add any other variety of your choice
- Mix everything together
- Add 1.25 cups of Water and the frozen peas
- Again mix everything together
- Turn off 'Saute' mode and turn on 'Pressure Cook' mode
- Set it in 'High' and let the 'Keep warm' button be turned on
- Set the timer for 10 minutes.
- Once the timer is off wait for 5 minutes and then manually release pressure. The pasta will look something like this. Adjust salt and mix everything well
- If there is water remaining in the pot then turn on 'Saute' mode again and stir until the water evaporates
- If there is no water then you don't have to turn on Saute mode. Just serve Pasta Upma as it is
- Adjust salt and if you have fresh corinader leaves you can garnish it before serving 🙂
- Boil water in a large vessel and add a pinch of salt, 1/2 tsp Oil. Add 1.5 cups of Pasta of your choice
- Let it boil in medium flame for 10-15 minutes until Pasta is cooked
- In the meantime saute the veggies like how we usually do for Semiya and Semolina Upma
- Heat oil. Add mustard seeds, urad & channa dal. Once they splutter add the veggies, salt & spice powders
- Sprinkle 1/4 cup water and close the pan. Let it get cooked for 4-5 minutes
- Now add the cooked pasta to this veggie mixture. Mix everything well. You can also add Garam Masala or MDH kitchen king masala if you like
- The Pasta Upma pic was prepared without IP. I used Butterfly shaped pasta for this.

I have noticed that if you leave the saute mode on with empty vessel, it turns to “Hot”. When you add oil & other tadka items that time, they splutter faster.
Hi Sowmya Thanks for the tip.. I just re read your comment and understood what you were trying to convey.Hence edited my previous reply.. It turns into ‘Hot’ after 2-3 minutes as far as I have observed. I guess it depends on the model 🤔 When I took the pic the dals looked pale and after few seconds they turned brown 😄 Since everything happens so quickly in IP sometimes it is difficult to take pics and cook simultaneously..
