I have been trying to overcome my fear of baking with yeast 🤷😁 Baking in general is not my forte and I still stick my comfort zone (basic cupcakes & cookies). After procrastinating for years I baked my first whole wheat loaf last week and have been bitten by that Baking Bug 😬 Though am not a big fan of Donuts I thought of trying this recipe for my little one. I deep fried a small batch of Donuts and then baked the rest. The amount of Sugar is used both in the Dough & the chocolate glaze is comparitively less to the store bought ones. These are not overly sweet. However if you have a sweet tooth you can go ahead and add more sugar for coating the Donuts
Whenever I try a new recipe I make sure to ready the recipe from atleast 10-15 different blogs/websites, watch a zillion recipe tutorials and then finally will start noting down the meausrements, ingredient list etc based on our family’s preference and as well as the things available. This also helps in understanding the overall approach, little techniques & tricks shared by different people on how to prepare that particular dish and how to customize it based on our liking.. I have tried my best to explain the steps in detail with pictures and other related information. Hope it helps you 🙂
Note :My Donut dough was very soft however I felt that baked donuts were bit dry since I baked at 200c for 18 minutes. So I would highly recommend you all to bake a slightly lower temperaturr say 180c and then keep an eye on Donuts after 10 minutes. This will help in preventing the Donuts from losing its moisture
The deep fried ones were fantastic ofcourse 😋😋 Loved the texture..

- In a Microwave safe bowl add 2 tablespoon butter, 1 cup milk and 1/4 cup water
- Microwave for 30 seconds..Use a spoon and mix everything together. Let it cool for a minute or two
- If you don't have a microwave then melt butter on a stovetop and once it is cooled down add milk and water
- In a bowl sift the flour
- Add Active Dry Yeast, Sugar and mix it with a spoon
- Now add the milk+butter mixture
- It will be sticky intially but once you keep working on it, a dough will be formed
- If you find it too difficult to work with the stickiness then lightly dust flour on a neat kitchen counter and apply a teaspoon of oil in your palm and start bringing the dough together
- Once the dough is formed let it rest for about 1-1.5 hours
- I left the dough in my instant pot (on 'Yogurt' mode)since I wasn't sure if the dough will raise well in this temperature
- If you are living in colder region make sure to leave the dough in a warmer place like near the room heater or inside an oven with the light turned 'On'
- After 1.5 hours the dough has doubled in size
- Sprinkle some flour on the counter and roll the dough. Use a cookie cutter to cut bigger rounds of the dough and then use a small cap from Oil bottle 😁 to make the inner hole..If you have Donut shaped cutter then use them
- You have to roll the remaining dough and then make shapes
- Once the shaping is done brush them with little oil and let it rise again for another 30-35 minutes
- I spread them in my baking tray and covered the tray in a cloth. This will ensure the top of the dough to not becomed dry. After the second raise the shaped dough pieces will be like the pic below. They would have fluffed up nicely
- Take the mini Donuts/Donut Holes aka Timbits in a plate and leave the rest on the baking tray
- I deep fried the Timbits/Donut holes and baked the rest in the oven
- Heat oil in a frying Pan
- Once it is medium hot add the Donut holes and deep fry until the sides are golden brown. If the oil is too hot it will brown quickly but it might not be cooked inside. So make sure the temperature is not too high
- You can follow the same process and deep fry the Donuts too
- Grind together Sugar+Cinnamon Powder & Cardamom Powder
- Coat the warm mini Donuts in this Sugar mixture immediately
- Serve them as a snack
- Preheat oven to 180c
- Sprinkle water on the baking tray to prevent Donuts from drying out
- Brush the top of the Donut with melted butter or milk and then bake them in the oven for 12-15 minutes. Keep an eye on them after 10 minutes and see if they are cooked
- Like I mentioned in the beginning of the post I baked mine at 200c for nearly 18 minutes
- They looked like this. I felt they were a bit drier
- Hence suggesting you all to bake at low temperature for lesser time
- Mix 2 tablespoon Cocoa Powder, 1/2 cup powdered sugar ,2 tbsp Milk, vanilla essence together
- Depending on the number of Donuts you have you can increase the quantity of Cocoa, milk & sugar
- Just ensure that adding too much Milk will make the Glaze runny
- Dip the Warm Donuts in this mixture
- Add sprinkles of your choice
- Delicious Homemade Donuts is ready to be served
