Koottu and Poriyal are the veggie based accompaniments that is served with traditional TamilNadu style Lunch menu. If you are new to cooking Tamil cuisine I hope this helps 🙂
Kootu(கூட்டு) is generally made from combining veggies along with a lentil(be it Moong/Masoor/Toor/ChannaDal) & coconut paste. It is slightly runny in texture. You can adjust the consistency based on your preference. Check this post for a detailed Koottu recipe prepared with Cucumber
Poriyal (பொரியல்) is a dry stir fry kind of side dish that is made with a basic Tadka+Spices+Grated Coconut & any veggies of your choice
The Broccoli Channa Dal koottu is my little one’s favorite. She is very choosy 🤷 It makes me so happy whenever she asks for extra serving of veggies. Paruppu Sadham+Nei+few spoons of Rasam+Koottu is the standard lunch menu for the little one.
In this recipe if you don’t have time to soak Channa Dal you can add 1/2 cup of Canned Chickpeas instead.
