Instructions
  1. Heat oil in a frying pan
  2. Add Urad dal, red chillies and saute until the daal turns golden brown color
  3. Add onions, ginger garlic pieces and tomatoes
  4. Add salt and hing
  5. Saute for 4-5 minutes until onions turn translucent also by now the tomatoes would have softened
  6. Dont add water
  7. Turn off the flame and wait until the mixture is cooled down
  8. Grind them to a smooth paste
  9. In the same pan add little oil, add mustard seeds and curry leaves
  10. Let them splutter
  11. Add the chutney and let it boil for a minute or two
  12. Remove from flame and serve this chutney with Idli, dosai or any southindian breakfast of your choice
Recipe Notes
Other variations you could try  :
 
  1. You can add fresh coriander leaves or mint leaves while grinding the chutney
  2. You can add 1/4 cup of grated coconut too
  3. If you find the chutney to be too sour add a tsp of sugar or jaggery
  4. You can follow the same recipe with just onions too
  5. You can add a pinch of Tamarind too for that extra zing 😋😋
  6. If you dont have coriander leaves or mint leaves you can add a handful of coriander seeds while roasting other ingredients
