The term ‘Mixture’ is nothing but mixing several things together. In the same way this most popular Diwali special savory item is prepared by mixing various other savory snacks together. I have seen my mom preparing kgs. of Mixture during Deepavali each and every year. We distribute sweets and snacks to our neighbors, me and my brother used to pack this to our hostel after the holidays are over. Those memories will never fade out from our minds no matter how much you grow old.
Each and every household in Tamil Nadu has a different style, recipe and combinations for preparing Mixture. Salt and Hing/Perungayam are really really important for this dish. Since we are adding different elements together there are chances that it might become too salty or too bland. So it is better to first use a little less salt while preparing these items individually and then to add extra salt and hing if required.
The most common items used in preparing this snack is listed below :
2. Karaboondhi
4.Murukku
5.Roasted Peanuts.
6.Roasted Cashewnuts.
7.Curry leaves.
8.Pori/Puffed Rice.
9.Rice Flakes/Flattened Rice/அவல்
10.Roasted Gram/பொட்டுக்கடலை
In a kadai add some oil and roast cashews, peanuts separately with a pinch of salt. Remove from the kadai and then in the same pan roast some curry leaves, puffed rice with a pinch of salt and a generous amount of Hing. You can directly add Aval/Flattened Rice to the mixture. Sometimes if you saute the Poha/Aval it beomes a bit hard to bite. Hence add it directly.
Take a wide bowl add whatever items you have from the above list and mix everything together. Sprinkle some extra hing/perungayam and salt if required. Curry leaves add an extra crunch, flavor to this dish. Hence don’t not miss it. If you want, you can even add any leftover savory snack items too that were prepared during the festival.
